Weekly Evaluations

8/3/19
This week I worked on creating my proposal and began working on my presentation. When I was beginning my proposal I didn't know what I wanted to make but as I wrote it I just began thinking about different ideas and taking inspiration from films and TV that I had seen recently. I finished my proposal in a day but I would have liked to have more time on this so I could have a more concrete idea that I know won't change. When I began working on my presentation I went back and looked at my last FMP presentation so I could see the structure and plan what need to be done and what would need to be added. I will be adding to this powerpoint over the weekend to have it ready and completed.

26/4/19
This week I mainly focused on rescheduling what I have done so I am able to achieve my target of completing the planning and filming by next week, when I have done this I am able to mainly focus on post production going into May. With my planning I am going to have all the paperwork and research done by the Monday and shoot will happen on the following Thursday.

3/5/19
I am now finding a new location to film since this week I found that the location I was going to use c004 is to loud for the fight scenes I am wanting to make. The new location is in the same building and will be able to absorb more noise allowing me to capture clear and crisp audio.

9/5/19
This week i began filming, this shoot though didn't work as we received complaints and were told to stop. Since this i have worked to get permission and inform people of when and where we are shooting so avoid this happening again at this location. I also finished the last of my pre-production paperwork meaning that i can film my piece to finished shot list and script which will make filming a whole lot easier. I am going to be filming on the 23rd. This i am trying to finish all the filming on this film in one day since this is going to be one of the few days i can shoot since i need time to edit and learn new techniques which will take me to the final deadline.

23/5/19
This week i finished my shoot, i ran into some problems on location with the audio i am recording but i am now trying to work around this too see if it can be salvaged. I picked up a graphics tablet to try new editing techniques to see if it will make the way i edit any faster. I tried this for 2 days and decided not to use it since i was struggling to edit my piece without the graphic tablet. What i am going ot be working on going into next week is getting a rough cut uploaded on my blog and finishing all my paperwork since i think this will be time consuming and i want to finish it before working on the more time consuming projects.

30/5/19
I have an edit uploaded on to my blog which was uploaded earlier on this week. All my paperwork was also uploaded to the blog which i have been meaning to do for the past week. Problems i have ran into this week is with the edit. I am struggling with the audio i captured as i can hear background noise from people talking around the shoot. I tried to combat this but i could only do so much, with more time i would take this audio into audition and strip the audio channels back to find the one with the background noise and lower the channel. I was also struggling with the VFX needed to make the film interesting since some of the shots are out of focus it makes it hard to mask actors and out and the software i am using is struggling to track so i am having to manually track effects which was taking to long. For the remainder of my time i am focusing on finishing the rest my blog as i am missing parts. Overall i have left my filming and editing too late as a result of my failed shoots before. What i have learned from this project is that the simple tasks take twice as long to do.

Evaluation

Ideas
When i pitched my original idea i believe my pitch was okay but could have been improved by using more specific terminology as this would create a more professional feel to the pitch which was what i was trying to achieve. Some improvements beside this in regards to the pitch i would have explored my context and representation more as i found my explanation too basic for a professional pitch which was what i was trying to create. In future pitches i will use a deeper explanation of this including a geo-demographic

Production
During this production i found out a lot about my weaknesses. I saw the choices that i made that led to the quality of my final production. Some problems i found with my final piece from producers stand point was the failure of the first and second shoot, it was a simple mistake but one that should be accounted for long before shooting and my punctuality was the cause for it since i couldn't keep to my schedule and this is a weakness that i am trying to combat. The reason for this breakdown in the schedule was because i didn't use the schedule, i worked based on what my actors and crew could do rather then setting a date and finding a crew.

Another problem  i found whilst filming was with the audio. Since there was a lot of background noise i struggled to get clear audio so what i did was i lowered the volume so it would only pick up specific frequencies which worked when i was using it but when audio operator used the Zoom they adjusted the setting making most of the audio unusable. This made the audio side of my project below my standard.

Overall i think my shoots did well but the planning behind them hindered the rest or the project since i was working with lots of new techniques i needed time to learn them which i didn't have making the overall piece suffer as a result. With the shots i got i found some issues with the focusing since i didn't have a focus reel or a external display to be able to see whether the shot was in focus as i was focusing on framing rather than focus as i was working with stunts which if someone gets injured that the shot i have to use so it has to be framed correctly.
Overall
The piece i made was a failure overall. The reason for this was because of a few things. These being the shoot schedule being changed which in turn forced me away from my original idea which i pitched. I believe it was the right decision to make as i got a product made but the overall quality of what i made was damaged by this change late in the project. Withe introduction of this i would have more time to spend on editing rather than waiting for the next shoot to roll around. From this is learned that i can work around set backs by practicing techniques with the test shots i got so i wouldn't waste time. Also i learned to work on the shoot date even if cast and crew don't turn up since it remove the need for a test shoot later down the line. Overall i learned a lot since this was the first piece i worked on which heavily reliant on actors.

Comments

  1. Planning documentation must be completed before your shoot... your location has changed but please keep all of these changes in documentation and/or theory / practical testing in your blogger. Write a schedule of research for today and tomorrow and use Dawn's sessions too to complete this.

  2. Perhaps you should record yourself explaining the practical and the theory setup testing for your film when you are in your location e.g. room C004 Thu next week.

  3. Reflect using Rolfe et al model structure for your final evaluation.

  4. You have changed the plan too late in the process of production. Show this in detail in your reflection and evaluation... use Johns model.
